Kentucky Cancer Program

Prevention & Screening

Kentucky experiences some of the highest cancer rates in the nation. Gratefully, many state leaders including Kentucky First Lady Britainy Beshear and Kentucky Lieutenant Governor Jacqueline Coleman have stepped up to be ambassadors for KCP's cancer outreach and survivorship programs.

Preventing cancer before it occurs or detecting it in the earliest stages when treatment may be most effective is the focus of many KCP programs and partnerships. Cancer control specialists provide screening services, education programs and materials. KCP links Kentuckians to cancer screenings available through state and local programs. Call your regional KCP office to find free or low-cost screenings.

KCP and other partners serve on the Advisory Committee to guide programming, and to administer a free lung cancer screening program for program eligible individuals. The KAAAC coalition also has a seat to ensure equitable access among African Americans and other high risk, underserved populations in the state.

Health Equity

A leader in cancer health equities, KCP stepped up over 30 years ago to engage the community in meaningful initiatives to reduce cancer incidence and mortality among at-risk populations, particularly African Americans and Hispanics. KCP is proud to continue innovative education, outreach, and screening programs today with the support of the Kentucky African Americans Against Cancer, the Harriett B. Porter Endowment, along with bilingual Hispanic outreach staff and volunteers.

Most recently, KCP received a federal health equity grant to research why African Americans and Hispanic women were not taking advantage of available cancer screenings and to identify outreach strategies to boost screening among these target populations. New program has been introduced in response to this successful research endeavor.

KAAAC

KAAAC is a coalition of faith-based representatives, community members, health professionals, and cancer survivors who work together to provide information on cancer, coordinate special events, provide screening and education, and to support cancer patients, families, and survivors. A nationally award-winning coalition, KAAAC was established as part of the National Cancer Institute's National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer in 1990. Hispanic Screening and Outreach

KCP has deep ties to the Hispanic population in Metro Louisville and in Western Kentucky through farm outreach services, faith-based initiatives, and Horses and Hope programs at the thoroughbred race tracks. Cancer control specialists and bilingual outreach workers have been providing community culturally appropriate cancer outreach and screening to Hispanic women and men for almost 20 years. The mobile mammography van visits churches with Hispanic ministries and Kentucky thoroughbred race tracks to provide breast cancer screening at no charge to uninsured patients.

Louisville And Jefferson County Partnership in Cancer Control

KCP started the Partnership in 1994 to increase breast and cervical cancer screening among low-income, particularly African Americans, in Metro Louisville. The coaltion has now been expanded to address other screenable cancers including colon and lung, with a special focus on delivering government funded services to high risk groups. Members include representatives from federally qualified health centers, health systems, primary care providers, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and community groups. Mobile services to reduce barriers to care have been the foundation of the coalition since inception.
